Context

Location: Cornish, ME

Habitat: Mixed Hardwoods

Month: November, 2024

Substrate: Soft moist snow, dusting

Trail Width: 1.75"

Questions:

1. What family?

Weasel Family. Notice how the one side lands slightly ahead of the other track. The right side is slightly ahead of the left side. This is typical of the Weasel 2x2 bound gait where the front tracks land and push off as the hind tracks land directly where the front tracks had been. Notice also the shape of the 2 foot drags create an hourglass like shape. Some people compare the overall shape of the 4 tracks and 2 foot drags between them to a dog bone.

2. Who is the likely species?

Given the small trail width, it is likely a Short-Tail Weasel
